The magic of the Phinda Game Reserve

When you get caught up in the urban life and strife in South Africa, do yourself a favour (budget permitting of course), spend a few days in the South African bush. It truly is the most revitalising way to clear your head and get some perspective of how you fit into nature's food chain.

Located about 20km from St Lucia, Nicole and I spent a few days in Phinda Game Reserve this past weekend for a wedding. It is a spectacular reserve with luxury accommodation at the various &Beyond lodges.

When we were last there in 2014 we stayed at the contemporary Forest Lodge. This time we stayed at more classically styled Rock Lodge, which is a 5 star 6 roomed lodge nestled amongst the rocks on the side of a cliff.

It goes without saying that the rooms are luxurious and well maintained, but it's the service from the friendly staff that really make the time there a special experience. Nothing is too much trouble. As part of the pre-wedding event, we even had an evening of drinks and snacks near one of the watering holes:

The blonde in the pic is our dear friend Brodie who was getting married in Phinda. The ceremony was in the middle of the bush. Here's a pic of my beautiful wife as a bridesmaid:

The reception was held at Vlei Lodge and it was a remarkable setting:

We also had time to go on a few game drives and came across a leopard chilling on a rock:

There was also a pride of lions who were just a little too far away to get a good picture using my iPhone, so I used a little trick. By placing the iPhone camera up against the binocular lens you can get a close up photo using your mobile!

The food was in abundance and absolutely decadent.  Thanks to all the staff at Phinda for a wonderful weekend, and much love and happiness to the new bride Mrs Nicci Brodie-Smith!

Nicole and I can't wait to go there again.
